This interview clip from Wonk Bridge’s article on ‘Bringing the Power of Data Back to the People’ focuses on the current GDPR environment and the business world’s response to it.

In the last half year, we’ve had large organisations and countries approaching us to use our technology with their own communities, citizens and customers. We are also used as a proofpoint that GDPR can invite innovation in the industry. It’s not a lockdown, instead it’s about making the world a better place.

The reason? GDPR has finally started to bite, so the regulated stunt has finally come. The entire tech industry has basically been told by the ICO in the UK that they are not GDPR compliant. As a result, they need to change their entire ecosystem. And that is a billion dollar industry. So, how do you change that quickly?

We have some new regulations coming on Artificial Intelligence in Europe. We have also seen California regulating, with congress democrats saying that this will become a next election issue. To conclude, you have a democratic candidate saying ‘we are going to legislate for ownership of data’, and you have Singapore and Australia coming through regulation. This is the way things go – they change slowly and suddenly very quickly. It is now that we are starting to see the acceleration happening.

At CitizenMe, we believe that there needs to be a place for everyone to be able to participate on their own terms. The fact is, this shift is going to happen, it’s just a matter of how and when. This is the way the digital economy should evolve. Through what we are doing at CitizenMe, we have already started nudging the ecosystem in a small way.

This short interview clip is just a part of our story, so watch out for the next bit! And if you missed the fourth interview clip, check it out here.
